At the end of September 2026, DramaBox is the most-rated short drama app on the US App Store: 864,598 ratings at 4.76★, which is 35% of all App Store ratings across the 14 iOS apps we track. On Google Play it holds 4.6★ from 5.48M reviews and 100M+ installs. Ten of the 14 iOS apps shipped an update in September, and China's micro-drama rules (NRTA Order No. 16) have been in force since 1 September. These numbers come from our own store snapshot taken on 30 September 2026.

September 2026 in five facts:
  • Biggest review base: DramaBox has 864,598 US App Store ratings, ahead of GoodShort (526,262) and ReelShort (502,673). TopDrama.app snapshot, 30 Sep 2026.
  • Fastest-growing: NetShort added 7,793 App Store ratings in four days (+3.8%), more than DramaBox (+3,095) and ReelShort (+2,929) combined.
  • Update activity: 10 of 14 iOS apps released a new version in September. DramaBox went from 6.8.0 (14 Sep) to 6.9.1 (27 Sep).
  • Maintenance warnings: Sereal+ has not updated its iOS app for 434 days, TopShort for 170 days and StarShort for 135 days.
  • Rules: NRTA Order No. 16 took effect on 1 Sep 2026. It requires a label on every AI-generated episode and bans algorithms that push over-spending (Arts. 34 and 37).

What changed in short drama apps in September 2026?

September 2026 was a month of steady updates rather than market shocks for short drama apps. The top five by App Store rating volume (DramaBox, GoodShort, ReelShort, NetShort and ShortMax) all released new versions or kept a recent one. Store ratings barely moved, apart from NetShort, which is still growing faster than the leaders. The largest structural change came from regulation: China's first comprehensive micro-drama rules took effect on 1 September.

This is the first TopDrama.app monthly report. Each month we collect US App Store and Google Play data for the 16 apps in our top drama app ranking, compare it with the previous snapshot and explain what the numbers mean for viewers. The raw data is published as an open CSV at /data/store-snapshot.csv.

Who gained the most in late September 2026?

Four days is a short window, so treat these as early signals. From the October report onward, the comparison will cover a full month. On Google Play the picture is similar: DramaBox moved from 5.46M to 5.48M reviews, NetShort from 1.83M to 1.88M and ReelShort from 1.89M to 1.91M.

Is DramaBox still growing?

Yes, but steadily rather than explosively. DramaBox gains about 770 App Store ratings a day on a base of more than 860,000, and its average rating held at 4.76. That pattern suits a mature market leader: Sensor Tower put DramaBox's Q1 2026 in-app revenue at about US$140M, up from $120M a year earlier, while FreeReels and NetShort lead on new downloads.

Which short drama apps were updated in September 2026?

Ten of the 14 tracked iOS apps released a version in September 2026: DramaBox, GoodShort, ReelShort, NetShort, ShortMax, StardustTV, Playlet, Kalos TV, FlareFlow and YourChannel. Frequent releases usually mean new titles, fixes to payment screens and support for new iOS versions. Four apps did not update in September, and three of them look under-maintained.

DramaBox's September releases

DramaBox shipped at least two iOS versions in September 2026: 6.8.0 on 14 September and 6.9.1 on 27 September. That continues a pace of roughly two releases a month since version 6.0.0 in May 2026. The download size fell from 198 MB to about 189 MB between those versions. Apple's listing still requires iOS 15.1 or later, and the app is listed for iPhone only.

Why a stale app is a risk for viewers

An app that has not been updated for months is a warning sign before you pay for a subscription. Old versions miss fixes for new iOS releases and payment flows, and stale apps are sometimes being wound down. Sereal+ (last iOS update 23 July 2025) also has the lowest Google Play rating in our set at 3.3. If you already subscribe to an app on the stale list, check how to cancel a weekly subscription before the next renewal.

YourChannel arrives on the App Store

YourChannel, a points-based short drama app from MAROON SKYLIGHT G.K. of Tokyo, has an iOS listing at version 1.0.0 dated 10 September 2026. With only three ratings (average 1.67) and 1K+ Google Play installs, it is too early to judge. Our YourChannel review will be updated when there is enough user data.

Why do App Store and Google Play ratings differ so much?

For most short drama apps the Google Play rating is lower than the App Store rating, and for ReelShort and Sereal+ the gap is almost a full star or more. ReelShort has 4.69 on iOS but 3.8 on Google Play. Sereal+ has 4.51 against 3.3. DramaBox has one of the smallest gaps among the large apps: 4.76 against 4.6.

The most likely reason is the review mix, not two different apps. Google Play reviews are more often written after a billing problem, and weekly auto-renewal is the most common complaint across the category. Apple also prompts users to rate inside apps, which tends to collect short positive ratings. When the two stores disagree strongly, read the recent one-star Google Play reviews before subscribing.

What do short drama apps cost in September 2026?

A weekly membership of about $19.99 is still the norm for the big short drama apps in the US in September 2026. DramaBox's US App Store in-app purchase list runs from $4.99 to $19.99. Apple lists the price of each item but not the billing period, so check the renewal period on the payment screen. Our price guide and DramaBox price page have the full breakdown.

Did prices change in September?

We found no change to DramaBox's listed US price range in September 2026: it remained $4.99–$19.99 per item. Price tests can differ by account and region, and web checkouts through ads can show other prices. From October we will record the top in-app purchase list of each app monthly, so price changes will appear in this report.

What does NRTA Order No. 16 change from September 2026?

China's NRTA Order No. 16, "Measures for the Administration of Micro-Drama Development", took effect on 1 September 2026. It is the first comprehensive rulebook for micro-dramas. It defines a micro-drama as a series with episodes under 20 minutes. It also requires AI-generated dramas to carry a label in every episode and bans algorithms designed to induce addiction or over-spending. Most leading apps outside China, including DramaBox, have Chinese parent companies, so the rules affect how their content is produced and reviewed.

Key articles of NRTA Order No. 16 (published 31 Jul 2026, in force 1 Sep 2026)
ArticleRuleWhat it means for viewers
Art. 2Micro-drama = episodes under 20 minutesFormal definition of the category
Art. 5Three-tier classification by budget and subjectSensitive and large-budget titles face stricter review
Art. 34AI-generated dramas must show a visible label in every episodeEasier to tell AI titles from filmed ones
Art. 37No algorithms that induce addiction or excessive spendingPressure on aggressive paywall and autoplay design
Art. 40Paid content must clearly disclose chargesClearer pricing, at least in China
Art. 46Fines up to RMB 100,000Enforcement tool for platforms
Art. 52Dramas shot in China for overseas broadcast are covered by filing rulesReaches content exported to global apps

For viewers in the US and Europe, the practical effect is indirect so far. The rules bind production and platforms in China, and app-store billing abroad still follows Apple's and Google's rules. Our micro-drama regulation guide compares Order No. 16 with EU and US consumer law.

AI-generated dramas keep growing

AI production is now the main source of new micro-dramas in China. CNSA estimates cited by CNBC on 26 August 2026 put China's Q1 2026 output at about 128,000 short dramas, "over 95% of which were AI." Dianzhong, DramaBox's parent, released 1,287 AI short dramas in May 2026 alone and runs a US$150M overseas creator fund. Expect more labelled AI titles in DramaBox's catalogue; see DramaBox AI dramas.

How is this monthly report made?

Every figure in this report comes from public store data collected by TopDrama.app on a fixed date, compared with the previous snapshot. We do not use estimates for ratings, versions or installs. Market figures (revenue, downloads) come from named analysts and keep their original publication dates.

1. CollectApp Store + Google Play 2. Normaliseratings, versions, installs 3. Comparevs previous snapshot 4. Publishreport + open CSV Context checkprices, rules, analyst data (dated sources)
How TopDrama.app builds the monthly short drama apps report. Method by TopDrama.app.
  1. Collect: ratings, rating counts, versions and release dates from Apple's public lookup service (US storefront), one request per app, plus rating, review count and installs from each app's US Google Play page.
  2. Normalise: round ratings to two decimals, keep Google Play's rounded review counts and install bands.
  3. Compare: calculate changes against the previous snapshot. This report compares 30 Sep 2026 with 26 Sep 2026.
  4. Context: add price lists, regulation and analyst data, each with its source and date.
  5. Publish: update this report, the ranking and the open CSV dataset.

Limits: store ratings are not downloads or revenue. Apple reports exact rating counts, but Google Play shows rounded review counts (for example "5.48M"), so small Google Play changes can hide inside the rounding. Our scoring method is explained on how we rate.

What the September data says for and against DramaBox

September's data supports DramaBox's place at #1 in our ranking, with the same caveats as before. It has the largest and one of the most consistent rating bases in the category and ships updates often. The weaknesses are still price and billing, not app quality.

In favour

  • Most App Store ratings in the category: 864,598 at 4.76★.
  • Small gap between stores (4.76 iOS vs 4.6 Google Play), which suggests fewer billing-driven one-star reviews than ReelShort.
  • Two or more iOS releases in September; latest 6.9.1 on 27 Sep 2026.
  • Tied #1 by in-app revenue in Q1 2026 (~US$140M, Sensor Tower).
  • 16 interface languages on iOS.

Against

  • Weekly membership around $19.99 in the US; $1,039 over 52 weeks if never cancelled.
  • Rating growth (+0.4% in four days) is slower than NetShort's.
  • Rated 18+ on the App Store (12+ on Google Play).
  • Shows ads and discloses cross-app tracking in its privacy label.
  • More AI-generated titles are coming, which some viewers dislike.

Which short drama app should you pick after September 2026?

For most viewers DramaBox remains the safest first choice: it has the largest rating base, frequent updates and a mature catalogue. GoodShort has the highest App Store average (4.90), NetShort is the fastest-growing, and ReelShort leads on US engagement. Avoid starting a paid plan on an app that has not been updated for months. Conclusion: September 2026 in short drama apps

September 2026 confirmed the existing order rather than changing it. DramaBox keeps the largest App Store rating base (864,598, 35% of the tracked set), a stable 4.76 average and a fast release cycle. GoodShort and ReelShort follow on volume, and NetShort is the one to watch on growth.

The risks for viewers are unchanged: weekly auto-renewal and under-maintained apps. Three apps in our set have not updated their iOS version for four months or more. Before paying anywhere, check the billing period, compare it with 52 weeks, and cancel in the store where you subscribed.

Regulation is the long-term change. With NRTA Order No. 16 in force, AI labels and limits on spending-driven design are now law in China, which is where most leading apps' parent companies are based. We will track how that reaches global catalogues in the next reports.
