Is ShortMax worth it in 2026?

ShortMax is worth it for viewers who want to save episodes for offline viewing, who love revenge, hidden-identity and alpha-romance stories, and who can use the $9.99 weekly pass instead of the $19.99 one. Its App Store rating of 4.61★ from more than 175,000 ratings shows most iPhone users are satisfied.

ShortMax is less worth it for pay-per-episode viewers: recent App Store reviews report unlock prices rising from 50 to 200 coins per episode, which is unverified but consistent across several September 2026 reviews. It also has a 17+ App Store rating, so it is not for younger viewers.

What is ShortMax and who owns it?

ShortMax is a vertical short drama app that streams one-minute-style episodes of serialized romance, revenge and fantasy stories. The App Store seller is SHORTTV LIMITED; the Google Play developer is listed as "SHORTMAX LIMITED" at an address in Mong Kok, Kowloon, Hong Kong.

Its parent is Jiuzhou Culture. China Business News, via 21jingji (16 May 2025), called the company "one of the big players" and said ShortMax has 6M daily active users in Southeast Asia. A blog also names a founder and claims 30M+ peak monthly users; both claims are unverified.

When did ShortMax launch?

ShortMax launched in September 2023: it first appeared on Google Play on 3 September 2023, and the iOS release date is 11 September 2023. That makes it about five months younger than DramaBox (April 2023) and a year younger than ReelShort (August 2022).

How big is ShortMax?

ShortMax is a 100M+ install app on Google Play with 2.05M reviews, and it is marketed with a claim of "50,000+ trending short dramas and movies in 19 languages" in its App Store description — a marketing figure we could not verify. Sensor Tower data for 2024 found that more than 60% of ShortMax and DramaBox downloads came from paid installs, against about 70% for ReelShort.

Sensor Tower's Q1 2026 report names DramaBox and ReelShort as the top-grossing short drama apps; our research found no comparable 2026 revenue figure for ShortMax. A secondary source cites +3,888% revenue growth from 2023 to 2024 and about $50M in H1 2024 revenue; neither figure is confirmed by a primary source.

ShortMax follows the standard short drama funnel: install free, watch the opening episodes, then unlock the rest with coins, ads or the Weekly Pass Pro. Its website adds a no-account route: "Watch free. No sign up needed."

How do ShortMax coins and ads work?

ShortMax coins are bought in one-time packs and spent per episode, while rewarded ads offer a slower free route. Apple's purchase list does not label how many coins each pack contains, and ShortMax does not publish an official coins-per-episode rate or a daily ad cap.

Is ShortMax free?

ShortMax is free to download and free for the opening episodes, plus daily free episodes, a new-user bonus and ad unlocks according to our app data. Its website says "Watch free. No sign up needed." — but, as with DramaBox, finishing a long series normally requires coins, many ads or a pass.

How much does ShortMax cost?

ShortMax costs $9.99 or $19.99 a week for its "Weekly Pass Pro" on the US App Store, and one-time purchases run from $3.49 to $24.99. The $9.99 tier is half the category's usual $19.99 benchmark, which is ShortMax's clearest price advantage over DramaBox.

What does ShortMax cost over a year?

A year of ShortMax's $9.99 weekly pass costs $519.48, and the $19.99 tier costs $1,039.48 over 52 weeks (TopDrama.app calculation). One App Store review mentions a yearly subscription, but no annual price appears in the US purchase list we checked, so no official annual figure is published.

How many coins does a ShortMax episode cost?

ShortMax users report 200 coins per episode, and one September 2026 review says the price "was 50 coins now it's 200." These are user reports, not an official rate, and because Apple does not show coin amounts per pack we cannot convert them into dollars. Check the unlock price in the app before buying coins.

What can you watch on ShortMax?

ShortMax specializes in high-drama genres: contemporary romance, CEO stories, werewolf, mafia, revenge, time travel, reborn and hidden or contract marriage, according to its store listing. Our ranking labels it the best app for revenge and alpha-romance fans.

Can you watch ShortMax offline?

Yes — ShortMax advertises offline saving of episodes, which is the main reason we name it the best app for offline viewing. DramaBox has no verified offline download feature, so commuters with patchy signal have a real reason to prefer ShortMax. NetShort also offers offline viewing.

Does ShortMax have a TV app?

No ShortMax TV app is verified. A blog claims ShortMax "supports TV devices," but we found no TV listing to confirm it. On a computer, the web player is the practical big-screen option.

What do users complain about on ShortMax?

ShortMax's complaint rate is relatively low for the category: in our tally of the 100 most recent US App Store reviews, 20 were 1–2★. By comparison, 49 of 100 were negative for Kalos TV and 64 of 100 for Playlet in the same exercise. The most common ShortMax complaint was being charged after cancelling.

ShortMax is a legitimate app with 100M+ Google Play installs, a named Hong Kong publisher and an established Chinese parent company. It is not a scam, but its weekly pass auto-renews, and the most common complaint in recent reviews is being charged after cancelling.

It tied for #1 in global short drama in-app revenue at ~US$140M in Q1 2026 (Sensor Tower), reported a $10M net profit in 2024 (MPA), rates higher on both stores from larger rating bases, and offers three content types — translated, local originals and AI dramas. That makes DramaBox the top drama app for most viewers, even though its weekly billing and ads are real drawbacks (see our DramaBox review).

How do you cancel a ShortMax subscription?

Cancel ShortMax in the store where you subscribed, at least 24 hours before the weekly pass renews. On iPhone: Settings → your name → Subscriptions → ShortMax → Cancel Subscription. On Android: Google Play → profile → Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions → ShortMax → Cancel.

Deleting the app does not stop billing. Because "charged after cancelling" is ShortMax's top complaint, take a screenshot of the cancellation screen and check your next statement. Refunds for store purchases go through Apple or Google.
