DramaBox vs ReelShort: DramaBox is the better all-round pick for most viewers in 2026. The two apps tied for #1 at about US$140M in Q1 2026 in-app revenue (Sensor Tower, June 2026), but DramaBox was profitable in 2024, rates higher on Google Play (4.6★ vs 3.8★ in our 26 Sep 2026 snapshot) and has a broader catalog. ReelShort wins on polished English originals, US engagement and a published annual plan.

Key facts:
  • Q1 2026 in-app revenue: DramaBox ~$140M, ReelShort ~$140M — a tie for #1 (Sensor Tower, June 2026). In Q1 2025 ReelShort led $130M to $120M.
  • 2024: DramaBox earned $323M with a $10M net profit; ReelShort earned ~$400M but was loss-making (Media Partners Asia, Sept 2025).
  • 2025 gross consumer spend: ReelShort ~$1.2B vs DramaBox $276M (Appfigures via TechCrunch) — ReelShort's clearest win.
  • Google Play rating: DramaBox 4.6★ (5.46M reviews) vs ReelShort 3.8★ (1.89M reviews) — TopDrama.app store snapshot, 26 Sep 2026.
  • Price: both charge about $19.99 a week in the US; ReelShort lists a $199.99 annual VIP, DramaBox publishes no official annual price.
  • Engagement: ReelShort 35.7 min/day in the US; DramaBox 27.9 min/day in Mexico, ahead of Prime Video (Omdia, Q4 2025).

DramaBox or ReelShort: what is the quick verdict?

DramaBox is our overall pick because it matches ReelShort on quarterly revenue, is the only one of the two reported as profitable, has the higher Google Play rating and offers the wider mix of translated, local and AI-made dramas. It is the top drama app for viewers who want volume and variety.

ReelShort is the better choice if you specifically want Hollywood-style, English-language originals, an iPad app, or a published annual price you can check before paying. Its US engagement (35.7 minutes per user per day, Omdia) is the highest figure recorded in the category.

Which app makes more money, DramaBox or ReelShort?

DramaBox and ReelShort tied on quarterly in-app revenue in Q1 2026: Sensor Tower's June 2026 report says both apps "remained the top-grossing short drama apps," each generating close to US$140M. A year earlier ReelShort led, with $130M against DramaBox's $120M in Q1 2025.

How do annual revenue figures compare?

Annual figures favour ReelShort, but they come from different firms with different definitions. Media Partners Asia (MPA, Sept 2025) put DramaBox at $323M in 2024 revenue and ReelShort at about $400M. Appfigures, via TechCrunch, put 2025 gross consumer spending at roughly $1.2B for ReelShort (up 119%) and $276M for DramaBox.

The DramaBox 2025 number is disputed. A Chinese industry annual report (短剧自习室, via Baijing, June 2026) gives DramaBox more than $470M in net pay revenue, and Sensor Tower's run-rate of $120M–$140M a quarter fits that higher figure better than Appfigures' $276M. We show all of them with their definitions rather than picking one; see DramaBox statistics for the full breakdown.

Is DramaBox or ReelShort profitable?

DramaBox is the profitable one. MPA reported that DramaBox made $10M net profit on $323M revenue in 2024, a margin of about 3%. Variety, citing the same report, said ReelShort "remains loss-making due to heavy marketing costs and amortization." For viewers this matters because a profitable app is less likely to shut down or change its pricing abruptly to survive.

Which app do users rate higher?

DramaBox rates higher on both stores. Our 26 Sep 2026 snapshot shows DramaBox at 4.76★ (shown as 4.8) from 861,503 App Store ratings and 4.6★ from 5.46M Google Play reviews. ReelShort shows 4.69★ from 499,744 App Store ratings and 3.8★ from 1.89M Google Play reviews.

ReelShort's Google Play score has fallen: our earlier research recorded it at 4.3★, and it now shows 3.8★. That is the single biggest ratings gap between the two apps, and it comes from a large base of reviews, so it is not noise.

What about brand preference surveys?

ReelShort wins on brand appetite. The YouGov Appetite Score 2026, as reported in our research files, gives ReelShort 55.44, DramaBox 31.95 and ShortMax 21.18. Store ratings measure people who already use the app; YouGov measures wider consumer interest, where ReelShort's earlier launch and US marketing still show.

Which app keeps viewers watching longer?

ReelShort holds the US record at 35.7 minutes per user per day in Q4 2025, ahead of Prime Video (26.9), Netflix (24.8) and Disney+ (23.0), according to Omdia's February 2026 release using Sensor Tower data. Omdia did not publish a US figure for DramaBox.

DramaBox's comparable number is from Mexico: 27.9 minutes per day, ahead of Prime Video (23.8) and Disney+ (22.5). Because the markets differ, the two figures cannot be ranked directly. Both show short dramas beating major streamers for time spent on phones.

Retention data exists only for DramaBox: 17% of its 2024 cohort was still active at month 6 and 15% at month 12, which Sensor Tower described as unusually strong for the category.

DramaBox vs ReelShort price: which is cheaper?

They cost about the same week to week. ReelShort's US App Store listing shows an explicit 7-day VIP at $19.99. DramaBox's US listing shows "Membership" items at $5.99, $17.99 and $19.99 and coin offers at $4.99, $9.99 and $19.99; Apple does not show billing periods, but Business Insider (Jan 2026) says DramaBox subscriptions are "usually $20 a week."

ReelShort is more transparent on longer plans. Its official site lists weekly VIP at $14.99–$19.99, monthly at $39.99 and annual at $199.99. DramaBox publishes no official annual price; users report about $200–$220 a year, and blog claims of $49.99 are unverified. The cheaper DramaBox Lite app lists $12.99 a week, $39.99 a month and $129.99 a year (Sensor Tower, July 2026) — see DramaBox Lite.

DramaBox Lite annual$129.99 / year$129.99$10.83

The lesson from our calculation: a weekly plan left running for a year costs about 5.2 times ReelShort's listed annual price. Whichever app you choose, check the billing period on the checkout sheet and read our weekly subscription trap guide. Full DramaBox tiers are on the DramaBox price page.

How is the content different?

DramaBox is a high-volume, mixed catalog; ReelShort is an originals-first studio. DramaBox combines translated or dubbed Chinese productions (the Dianzhong corporate site says 95% of its 2,000+ titles, a company claim), local originals from its Los Angeles studio (60+ titles in 2025, per The Ankler) and a growing slate of AI-made dramas. ReelShort focuses on premium English-language originals shot for Western audiences.

Which genres does each app lean on?

Both lean heavily on romance: CEO and billionaire stories, werewolf and alpha romance, revenge, hidden identity and secret-baby plots. DramaBox adds more translated Asian titles and is pushing into Latin America with locally adapted Spanish and Portuguese dramas in 2026. ReelShort's edge is production polish and US casting. Browse examples on our DramaBox genres and shows page.

Does either app use AI-generated dramas?

DramaBox openly does. Its parent Dianzhong released 1,287 AI short dramas in May 2026 and announced a US$150M overseas creator fund in April 2026. Some subscribers dislike this; others like the extra volume. Since 1 Sep 2026 Chinese rules (NRTA Order No. 16) require a visible AI label in every episode of AI-generated micro-dramas. Our research files hold no comparable AI figures for ReelShort. More on DramaBox AI dramas.

Which app supports more languages?

ReelShort's iOS app lists more interface languages: 21 in our 26 Sep 2026 snapshot versus 16 for DramaBox (English plus Arabic, French, German, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Portuguese, Simplified and Traditional Chinese, Spanish, Thai, Turkish and Vietnamese). One of our research sources counted 22 for ReelShort.

Who owns DramaBox and ReelShort?

DramaBox is published by STORYMATRIX PTE. LTD. in Singapore, a subsidiary of Beijing Dianzhong Technology (founded 2011), and launched in April 2023. ReelShort is run by Crazy Maple Studio / New Leaf Publishing, launched in August 2022, and COL Group holds about 49% according to Variety. COL Group also backs the sister apps FlareFlow and Sereal+.

DramaBox has notable Western partnerships: it was one of four companies in the 2025 Disney Accelerator and signed The Trade Desk as its first ad-buying (DSP) partner in April 2026. Read more on the DramaBox company page.

In July 2025 Dianzhong (DramaBox's parent) and Tinghuadao publicly accused ReelShort of 1:1 copying of several titles, according to a 10jqka report dated 26 Jul 2025. Our sources do not record a court outcome, so treat it as an accusation, not a ruling. For viewers it has no practical effect on either app today.

How do both apps charge you?

DramaBox and ReelShort use the same freemium funnel: install for free, watch the first episodes, then hit a paywall. From there you can unlock with free coins from check-ins and rewarded ads, buy coin packs, or start an auto-renewing VIP membership.

DramaBox's developer has said in App Store replies that it recommends "the subscription rather than coins" because a subscription unlocks the catalog, not one drama. Some users on both apps still report paying coins for certain titles while subscribed. See how DramaBox coins work and how to get free episodes.

How much of the market do the two leaders hold?

Together, DramaBox and ReelShort took about 37% of short-drama in-app revenue in Q1 2026. Sensor Tower put the whole category at about $750M that quarter (+20% year on year); each leader earned roughly $140M, or about 19% each (TopDrama.app calculation from Sensor Tower figures).

Neither leader is the download leader: Sensor Tower names FreeReels as the most downloaded short-drama app in Q1 2026, with NetShort #3 by downloads. See our DramaBox vs NetShort comparison for the download race.

Which devices does each app support?

ReelShort supports iPad; DramaBox's iOS app is "Only for iPhone." Our app data lists ReelShort on iPhone, iPad, Android and web, and DramaBox on iPhone, Android and a web player. Neither app lists a dedicated TV app in our sources. Details and workarounds are on our DramaBox devices page.

Which app is safer for families?

DramaBox carries the stricter rating: 18+ on the US App Store ("Frequent: Mature or Suggestive Themes") but 12+/Teen on Google Play. ReelShort is 12+ on the App Store in our snapshot. Parents should follow the stricter Apple rating for DramaBox. Both apps disclose advertising, and DramaBox's privacy label lists identifiers and usage data used for cross-app tracking.
