Drama apps such as DramaBox, ReelShort and ShortMax usually sell VIP as a weekly auto-renewing subscription, typically about $19.99 a week in the US. Left running, that is about $1,039 a year. Surprise charges happen when people think a plan is monthly, forget to cancel 24 hours before renewal, or buy on the web.

Key facts:
  • Business Insider (Jan 2026): DramaBox subscriptions are "usually $20 a week"; $19.99 is the category norm across apps.
  • TopDrama.app calculation: $19.99 × 52 = $1,039.48 a year, about 5× ReelShort's $199.99 annual VIP.
  • Auto-renewal can only be stopped by turning it off at least 24 hours before the period ends (App Store listing).
  • Deleting the app does not cancel; web purchases do not appear in Apple or Google subscription settings.
  • China's NRTA Order No. 16 (1 Sep 2026) requires clear charge disclosure (Art. 40); the US FTC "click-to-cancel" rule was vacated in Jul 2025.

Why do drama apps charge weekly?

Drama apps charge weekly because short dramas are binged in bursts: a 60-episode series takes about 90 minutes, so a week of access matches how people watch, and a weekly price looks small at checkout. DramaBox's developer recommends "the subscription rather than coins" because it "will unlock all dramas on our app, not just one drama."

For the apps, weekly billing also means 52 renewal points a year instead of 1 or 12. Our fact base records weekly auto-renewal as the single most common reason people complain about DramaBox, and our competitor fact sheet found "charged after cancelling" to be the top complaint across every app we checked.

Why am I charged weekly?

You are charged weekly because the membership you bought is a 7-day plan that renews automatically until you turn off renewal. On Apple's store the billing period is not shown in the app's in-app purchase list, so many people assume "Membership $19.99" is monthly. The period is shown on the final confirmation sheet and in your subscription settings.

What is the DramaBox $19.99 charge?

The $19.99 charge is most likely a DramaBox weekly membership renewal. DramaBox's US App Store list shows "Membership" items at $5.99, $17.99 and $19.99 and "Special offer" coin items at $4.99, $9.99 and $19.99 (25 Sep 2026). Check your Apple or Google receipt to see which item it was. More in our DramaBox price guide.

How much does a weekly subscription cost per year?

A weekly subscription costs 52 times its price per year. At $19.99 a week that is $1,039.48; at $9.99 it is $519.48; at $29.99 it is $1,559.48 (TopDrama.app calculation). By comparison, ReelShort lists an annual VIP at $199.99 and DramaBox Lite at $129.99.

What do users actually report paying?

User reports show how this adds up. One DramaBox Google Play review (28 Aug 2025, 1,054 found helpful) said: "$25 for a week or $220 for the year… if it charged $25 for a month i would have gotten it." A 2026 complaint on Şikayetvar described "four recent weekly payments totaling $67.56." Both are user reports.

How do intro offers and trials turn into weekly charges?

Intro offers are cheap first periods that renew at the full price. DramaBox lists a $5.99 "Membership" and $4.99–$19.99 "Special offers" on the US App Store, and blogs report weekly intro prices of $3.99–$5.99 (unverified). If you do nothing, the next renewal is typically the standard weekly rate, often $19.99.

Do drama apps use 3-day trials?

Some reportedly do. Research compiled for this site mentions promotional 3-day trials that roll into weekly auto-renewal, but no primary source confirms it for DramaBox, so check the paywall text. Any trial that asks for payment details will renew unless cancelled at least 24 hours before it ends.

When exactly does renewal happen?

Renewal is charged within the last 24 hours of the current period. DramaBox's App Store listing states: "Unless the user turns off automatic renewal at least 24 hours before the current subscription period ends… Within 24 hours of the end of the current subscription period, the system will charge the account renewal fee." In a 7-day plan, your safe cancellation window is the first 6 days.

Why can't I find my subscription in Apple or Google settings?

If a drama app subscription does not appear in Apple or Google subscription settings, you almost certainly paid on the web, through a Facebook or website link. DramaBox accepts web payments, and one complainant said the charge "does not appear under my Apple or Google subscriptions." Web subscriptions must be cancelled with the app's support or through the payment method.

Do other apps have the same web-billing problem?

Yes. StardustTV reviewers report a VIP bought on the web not carrying over to the app, StarShort reviewers mention buying "on Facebook" and "on this website," and 11 of StarShort's 38 recent reviews say there is no way to cancel (competitor fact sheet, Sep 2026). Always keep web receipts.

How do you check the billing period before paying?

Check the billing period on the final payment sheet, not on the app's banner. Both Apple and Google show a confirmation sheet before a subscription starts, and that sheet, together with your receipt and subscription settings, is where the period appears. For DramaBox, the App Store's in-app list does not show periods, so the confirmation sheet is the only reliable place.

What should you look for at checkout?

  • The period: week, month or year.
  • Whether the price is an intro price and what the renewal price is.
  • Whether the payment is Apple, Google or a web form.
  • The renewal date, so you can set a reminder.

Is $19.99 a week or a month on DramaBox?

Almost always a week. Business Insider reported DramaBox subscriptions as "usually $20 a week," ReelShort labels its $19.99 VIP as 7-day, and user reports cluster at $14–$25 a week. If your receipt says otherwise, the receipt is what counts.

How do you cancel a weekly drama app subscription?

Cancel where you paid. On iPhone, go to Settings → [your name] → Subscriptions → the app → Cancel Subscription; on Android, open Google Play → profile → Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions → the app → Cancel. DramaBox web subscriptions are cancelled through DramaBox support. Deleting the app never cancels billing.

How to cancel on iPhone

Open Settings, tap your name, tap Subscriptions, choose the app (for example DramaBox) and tap Cancel Subscription. Do it more than 24 hours before renewal. Our step-by-step DramaBox cancel guide includes screenshots of each path in words.

How to cancel on Android

Open Google Play, tap your profile icon, then Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions → the app → Cancel subscription. Uninstalling the app does not stop Google Play billing.

How to cancel a web subscription

Email the app's support with the receipt and ask for cancellation in writing; for DramaBox that is feedback@dramabox.com. If charges continue, contact your card issuer. Note that an unofficial domain, dramabox.co.uk, warns that chargebacks without contacting support may lead to suspension; that domain is not confirmed as official.

Can you get a refund?

Sometimes. App-store charges are refunded by Apple (reportaproblem.apple.com) or Google under their own policies, case by case. DramaBox's terms call purchases non-refundable and say coins "cannot be exchanged to any currency," but store policies and consumer law still apply.

How can your bank or card help?

Your bank or card is the last line of defence. Turning on transaction alerts shows every weekly renewal the moment it posts, and a card issuer can dispute charges you did not authorize or could not cancel. For DramaBox and other apps billed through Apple or Google, start with the store refund request before disputing.

Which card settings help?

  • Transaction alerts for every card-not-present payment.
  • A separate card or virtual card for subscriptions, if your bank offers one, so you can freeze it.
  • Reviewing your statement for repeated small charges from Apple, Google or unfamiliar web merchants.

Can someone else in my family be charged?

Possibly. DramaBox's App Store listing says "some in-app purchases and subscriptions may be shareable with your family group,", so check who in your family group can buy. Parents should also note DramaBox is rated 18+ on the App Store.

What does the law say about weekly auto-renewal?

Rules differ by region. China now requires short drama platforms to disclose charges clearly; the EU requires an easy withdrawal button for online contracts; the US federal "click-to-cancel" rule was struck down in 2025. App-store rules from Apple and Google apply everywhere DramaBox is sold through them.

Does China's rule apply outside China?

Not directly to overseas viewers. Order No. 16 governs platforms and productions under China's jurisdiction, including dramas shot in China for overseas broadcast (Art. 52). It signals a direction: price transparency and anti-addiction design are becoming regulatory expectations for the whole category.

What happened to the US click-to-cancel rule?

The FTC's amended Negative Option Rule, which would have required simple online cancellation, was vacated by the US Court of Appeals for the 8th Circuit in July 2025. US viewers therefore rely on app-store rules, state laws and card-issuer disputes.

How to use DramaBox smartly without surprise charges

DramaBox is our top pick among drama apps, and weekly billing does not have to be a trap. Used deliberately, one week of VIP is a cheap way to binge several series: it tied #1 by revenue in Q1 2026 (~$140M, Sensor Tower) for a reason, with 4.8 stars from 861,503 App Store ratings.

The one-week binge routine

  1. Watch free episodes and use ad unlocks until you have a list of series you want to finish.
  2. Buy one week of VIP through the App Store or Google Play, not a web link.
  3. Cancel auto-renewal the same day; on store subscriptions access normally continues until the period ends.
  4. Binge your list during the week.
  5. If you find yourself buying week after week, compare an annual plan (break-even about 10 weeks at $19.99).

Ready to try it? Open DramaBox and start with the free episodes, or compare plans in our short drama app prices guide.

Checklist: avoid surprise charges

  • Read the period on the confirmation sheet.
  • Multiply weekly × 52; compare with annual.
  • Pay through a store, not a social-media link.
  • Cancel auto-renew on day one if you only want one week.
  • Keep receipts; turn on card alerts.
  • Never rely on deleting the app.

Pros and cons of weekly billing

Weekly billing is flexible but unforgiving. It suits DramaBox users who binge in bursts and cancel immediately; it hurts those who forget.

Pros

  • Low entry price for a binge week.
  • Unlocks most titles at once.
  • Easy to stop after one period if cancelled in time.

Cons

  • $1,039.48 a year at $19.99 if left running.
  • Billing period hidden in App Store in-app lists.
  • Web purchases hard to find and cancel.
  • Intro prices renew at full price.

Weekly subscription FAQ

Why am I charged weekly by a drama app?

Because you bought a 7-day membership that renews automatically until you turn off renewal at least 24 hours before it ends. Most drama apps, including DramaBox and ReelShort, sell VIP weekly.

Why did DramaBox charge me $19.99?

Most likely a weekly membership renewal: $19.99 is DramaBox's typical US weekly price and one of its listed Membership items. Check the receipt from Apple, Google or the web checkout to confirm.

How much is $19.99 a week per year?

$1,039.48 over 52 weeks (TopDrama.app calculation), about $86.56 a month. ReelShort's listed annual VIP is $199.99 by comparison.

Does deleting the app cancel my subscription?

No. Subscriptions must be cancelled in App Store or Google Play subscription settings, or with support for web purchases. The app can be deleted and still charge you.

Why can't I see my DramaBox subscription in settings?

You probably subscribed on the web, via a Facebook or website link. Those subscriptions do not appear in Apple or Google settings; cancel by emailing feedback@dramabox.com with your receipt.

When should I cancel to avoid the next charge?

At least 24 hours before the current period ends, per DramaBox's App Store terms. Cancelling on day one of a weekly plan is safest.

Can I get a refund for a weekly charge?

You can request one: Apple via reportaproblem.apple.com, Google via its refund request, web purchases via app support. DramaBox's terms call purchases non-refundable, but store policies decide case by case.

Do intro offers renew at full price?

Usually yes. A $4.99 or $5.99 first week typically renews at the standard weekly rate, often $19.99; check the renewal price on the confirmation sheet.

Is weekly billing legal?

Yes, in general, if prices and renewal terms are disclosed. China now requires clear charge disclosure (NRTA Art. 40), the EU has withdrawal-button rules (Directive 2023/2673), and the US FTC click-to-cancel rule was vacated in July 2025.

Is an annual plan cheaper than weekly?

Yes, for anyone watching more than about 10 weeks a year at $19.99 a week. ReelShort lists $199.99 a year and DramaBox Lite $129.99; the main DramaBox app has no official annual price.

Can my bank stop drama app charges?

Your card issuer can dispute unauthorized charges and some banks let you freeze or replace a card. For Apple and Google purchases, request a store refund first.

Is DramaBox a scam because it charges weekly?

No. DramaBox is a real, top-ranked app (4.8 on the App Store, 4.6 on Google Play) whose weekly auto-renewal is disclosed in its listing. The risk is billing confusion, not fraud; see Is DramaBox safe?

Bottom line

  • Drama apps bill weekly because viewers binge in bursts; $19.99 a week is the norm and costs $1,039.48 a year if left running.
  • Weekly plans suit deliberate bingers who cancel on day one; they do not suit anyone who forgets renewals or pays through web links.
  • Check the period at checkout, pay through a store, cancel 24 hours+ before renewal and never rely on deleting the app.
  • Used this way, DramaBox remains the top drama app to binge without surprise charges.
