The short drama market is worth about $11 billion worldwide in 2025 by Omdia's all-revenue measure, and short drama apps earned $2.98 billion in App Store and Google Play purchases alone (+115%, Sensor Tower). DramaBox and ReelShort are the top-grossing apps, each near $140M in Q1 2026, while FreeReels leads downloads.

Key facts:
  • 2025 short drama app IAP: $2.98B, +115% (Sensor Tower via Marketing Dive).
  • Q1 2026: ~$750M IAP (+20% YoY) and 850M+ downloads (+140% YoY) (Sensor Tower, June 2026).
  • Q1 2026 downloads: Southeast Asia 32%, Latin America 23%, India 22% (Sensor Tower).
  • Forecasts: Omdia $14B global in 2026; Deloitte $7.8B in-app micro-series in 2026; MPA $9.5B ex-China by 2030.
  • US audience: ~66M monthly users (Reuters, Aug 2026); YouTube microdramas: 6.5B views in H1 2026 (Tubefilter).

How big is the short drama market in 2026?

The answer depends on what is counted. Sensor Tower tracks only in-app purchases on the App Store and Google Play: $2.98B in 2025. Omdia counts all microdrama revenue including China, ads and web payments: $11B in 2025, $14B in 2026. DramaBox figures vary for the same reason, from $276M to $470M+ for 2025.

Why do market-size numbers disagree?

Market-size figures disagree because each firm measures something different. Sensor Tower and Appfigures measure app-store spending and exclude ads, web payments and third-party Android stores. Omdia and Media Partners Asia (MPA) model all revenue, including China and advertising. None is wrong; each must be quoted with its definition.

How much of the market is China?

China is most of it. Omdia estimated that China accounted for 83% of 2025 microdrama revenue, and its 2026 forecast splits $11B China and $3B ex-China (about 79/21, TopDrama.app calculation). CNSA counted 576 million Chinese micro-drama viewers in June 2024, 52.4% of internet users.

How fast is the short drama market growing?

Spending is still growing, but more slowly than downloads. Global short drama IAP rose from about $178M in Q1 2024 to about $700M in Q1 2025 and $750M in Q1 2026 (Sensor Tower). Downloads grew 140% in the same year to Q1 2026, while IAP grew only 20%. DramaBox grew from $120M to ~$140M per quarter over that year.

How did the market take off?

Appfigures data reported by TechCrunch shows consumer spending on short drama apps rising from $1.8M in Q1 2023 to $146M in Q1 2024; March 2024 alone brought $65M, against $619K a year earlier. By 2025 the category had grown to $2.98B for the year.

Is growth slowing?

Revenue growth is slowing while installs accelerate. Q1 2026 IAP was up 20% year on year against 140% download growth, because new users increasingly come from lower-paying regions. Sensor Tower also noted an inconsistency: its earlier "nearly $700M" Q1 2025 figure and "+20% to $750M" imply different bases.

Where are short drama apps downloaded?

Most downloads now come from emerging markets. In Q1 2026, Southeast Asia took 32% of global short drama downloads, Latin America 23% and India 22%; Sensor Tower says these three "together accounted for more than three-quarters of global downloads… with all three markets posting triple-digit year-on-year growth." DramaBox is expanding into Latin America with local originals.

Why do more downloads not mean more money?

Because users in new markets pay far less. Secondary estimates put revenue per download at about $4.70 in the US, about $2.00 globally and about $0.70 in Southeast Asia (36Kr/Sohu; Vitrina). In Q1 2025 the US alone produced about $350M, 49% of global IAP (Sensor Tower, now over a year old).

How much time do users spend?

Engagement is rising fast. Sensor Tower measured an average of 25 minutes a day in short drama apps in April 2026, up 85% from January 2025, and about 40 minutes a day in Southeast Asia. In the US, Omdia found ReelShort users averaged 35.7 minutes a day in Q4 2025, ahead of Netflix at 24.8.

Which are the top-grossing short drama apps?

DramaBox and ReelShort are the top-grossing short drama apps: Sensor Tower says both "remained the top-grossing short drama apps in Q1 2026, each generating close to US$140M in in-app revenue." Together they took about 37% of category IAP. The download leader is different: FreeReels passed 100M installs in Q1 2026, up 123% quarter on quarter.

Why do revenue and download rankings differ?

Revenue rankings reward apps that convert US viewers to weekly memberships; download rankings reward free, ad-supported apps in large emerging markets. DramaBox ranks at the top on revenue, while FreeReels and NetShort lead download momentum. Six short drama apps were in the global top 40 by downloads in Q1 2026 (Sensor Tower).

How much does DramaBox really make?

Sources disagree by definition: $276M 2025 gross consumer spend (Appfigures via TechCrunch), more than $470M net pay revenue (短剧自习室 via Baijing), and US$530M for all of Dianzhong's overseas business (chairman Chen Ruiqing). Sensor Tower's ~$120–140M per quarter fits best with the ~$470M figure. See DramaBox statistics.

Is anyone making a profit?

DramaBox is. MPA reported $10M net profit on $323M revenue in 2024, about a 3% margin (TopDrama.app calculation), while ReelShort "remains loss-making due to heavy marketing costs and amortization." Dianzhong said in 2024 its short-drama net margin in China was under 1%.

Who owns which short drama app?

Are Western media companies entering?

Yes. Reuters (Aug 2026) reported that NBCUniversal and Fox are entering the market, and Netflix, Peacock, Disney+ and YouTube are testing vertical feeds and microdramas. Disney selected DramaBox for its 2025 Accelerator, and SAG-AFTRA's Verticals Agreement (13 Oct 2025) now covers productions under $300,000.

Who is the short drama audience?

The audience is large and skews female and over 30. Reuters estimated about 66 million US monthly users in August 2026, more than double a year earlier. MPA describes the core US audience as "affluent, urban women aged 30 to 60"; Omdia targets women aged 25–45. DramaBox kept 15% of its 2024 users at month 12 (Sensor Tower).

How big are microdramas on YouTube?

Tubefilter reported 6.5 billion microdrama views on YouTube in H1 2026, with views on TV screens up 90% year on year. Ampere Analysis (Oct 2025, 100,000+ consumers) found more than 1 in 10 internet users had watched mini-dramas on social media, and 44% of those viewers used YouTube.

Who watches microdramas on YouTube?

Digital i data (World Screen, 26 Mar 2026) shows women aged 35–44 account for 11.5% of all YouTube streams but 20.8% of streams to top micro-drama channels, while women 45–54 account for 15.7%. The pattern matches MPA's in-app audience profile.

What do forecasts say about 2026–2030?

All major forecasts expect strong growth but differ widely because of definitions. Omdia expects global microdrama revenue of $14B in 2026 and more than $22B by 2030; MPA expects ex-China revenue to reach $9.5B by 2030, with the US at $3.8B; Deloitte forecasts in-app micro-series revenue of $7.8B in 2026. DramaBox's chairman projects the app will pass $1B in 2026 (a projection).

Which other markets matter?

MPA forecasts Japan at more than $1.2B by 2030. Omdia expects the US to be about 50% of ex-China revenue in 2026, or $1.5B. Other published forecasts, such as Lucintel's 7.1% CAGR or QY Research's AI short-drama figures, use different scopes and should not be mixed with these.

Will ads replace payments?

Not outside China. MPA expects the 2030 ex-China mix to be 74% subscriptions/IAP, 25% ads and 1% commerce, while China shifts to 56% ads. DramaBox started selling programmatic ads through The Trade Desk on 26 Apr 2026, its first DSP partner.

Three trends define 2026: AI-made dramas, more advertising, and new regulation. DramaBox's parent released 1,287 AI short dramas in May 2026 alone, ad-supported apps like FreeReels are winning downloads, and China's NRTA Order No. 16 took effect on 1 Sep 2026.

How is AI changing short dramas?

AI now dominates Chinese output: CNSA estimates cited by CNBC say about 128,000 short dramas were released in China in Q1 2026, "over 95% of which were AI." Dianzhong announced a US$150M overseas AI creator fund in April 2026. See DramaBox AI dramas.

Why are ad costs rising?

Competition for viewers is pushing up user-acquisition prices. Chinese CPMs rose from RMB 50–80 in 2023 to RMB 150–200 in 2025 (Ashley Dudarenok via CNBC). Paid installs made up more than 60% of DramaBox and ShortMax downloads and about 70% of ReelShort's in 2024 (Sensor Tower).

What does the new regulation require?

NRTA Order No. 16 requires a visible AI label in every episode of AI-generated dramas (Art. 34), bans algorithms that induce addiction or over-spending (Art. 37), requires clear disclosure of charges (Art. 40), and sets fines of up to RMB 100,000 (Art. 46). It also covers dramas shot in China for overseas broadcast (Art. 52).

How does money flow through a short drama app?

Money flows from ad spend to viewers to app stores. The diagram shows why trackers disagree: Sensor Tower sees only the store step, while Omdia and MPA model the whole chain.
