What are ReelShort and NetShort?
ReelShort and NetShort are vertical short drama apps. Both stream serialized stories in episodes of about one to two minutes, shot in portrait format for phones. Both use the same freemium model: the first episodes of each series are free, and later ones are unlocked with coins, rewarded ads or an auto-renewing VIP membership.
ReelShort: the US pioneer
ReelShort launched in August 2022 and is widely credited with starting the US micro-drama boom. It is published by New Leaf Publishing Inc. with Crazy Maple Studio as its studio brand. COL Group, a Shenzhen-listed Chinese digital publisher, holds about 49% (Variety). Media Partners Asia put its 2024 revenue at about $400M, but described it as loss-making because of heavy marketing spend.
NetShort: the fast riser
NetShort is published by NETSTORY PTE. LTD. of Singapore and appeared on the US App Store in July 2024. In under two years it reached 100M+ Google Play installs. Sensor Tower ranked it #3 among short drama apps by Q1 2026 downloads, with 196% quarter-on-quarter growth. Its website claims "45000+ viral short dramas", a company figure we could not verify.

Which app is bigger: ReelShort or NetShort?
ReelShort is about 2.7 times bigger than NetShort by in-app revenue: ~$140M against ~$52M in Q1 2026. Together they took about a quarter of the ~$750M that short drama apps earned through the App Store and Google Play that quarter. ReelShort holds about 18.7% and NetShort about 6.9% (TopDrama.app calculation from Sensor Tower's category total and Naavik's NetShort estimate).
Share of the short drama market
ReelShort and DramaBox each hold about 18.7% of Q1 2026 category in-app revenue, while NetShort holds about 6.9%. The remaining 55.7% is spread across dozens of apps, including ShortMax, GoodShort and FreeReels. Market concentration is falling as new apps grow, which Sensor Tower links to fast download growth in Southeast Asia, Latin America and India.
Is either app profitable?
ReelShort was loss-making in 2024 according to Media Partners Asia, despite about $400M in revenue. We found no public profit figure for NetShort. For comparison, MPA reported that DramaBox made a $10M net profit on $323M of 2024 revenue, the only openly profitable app of the three. Profitability matters to viewers because loss-making apps tend to push harder on paywalls and weekly renewals.
Which app has better ratings?
NetShort has better ratings on both stores, and the gap on Google Play is large: 4.7★ against ReelShort's 3.8★. On the US App Store the two are close: NetShort 4.73 from 211,343 ratings, ReelShort 4.69 from 502,673 ratings (TopDrama.app snapshot, 30 September 2026). ReelShort has the bigger rating base, but NetShort's users are more satisfied, especially on Android.
Why is ReelShort rated 3.8 on Google Play?
ReelShort's low Google Play score most likely reflects billing complaints, not playback quality. Weekly auto-renewal at $19.99 is the most common complaint across short drama apps, and Android reviewers tend to rate after a charge. ReelShort's iOS score of 4.69 shows that many users are happy with the content. The 0.9-star gap between the two stores is one of the largest in the category.
Which app is gaining users faster?
NetShort is gaining ratings much faster: +7,793 US App Store ratings between 26 and 30 September 2026 (+3.8%), against +2,929 for ReelShort (+0.6%). On Google Play, NetShort went from 1.83M to 1.88M reviews and ReelShort from 1.89M to 1.91M in the same window. If this pace holds, NetShort could pass ReelShort's Google Play review count within weeks. Full details are in our September 2026 short drama apps report.
Which is cheaper: ReelShort or NetShort?
NetShort is cheaper for a short binge; ReelShort is cheaper for watching all year. NetShort's lowest weekly VIP tier is $5.99, against ReelShort's $14.99–$19.99 weekly range. ReelShort's official site lists an annual VIP at $199.99 and a monthly VIP at $39.99, while no NetShort annual or monthly plan appears in its US purchase list. Apple does not show the billing period of every item, so confirm it on the payment screen.
| Plan | ReelShort | NetShort |
|---|---|---|
| Cheapest weekly VIP | $14.99 (official site range) | $5.99 |
| Standard weekly VIP | $19.99 (7-day, App Store) | $19.99 |
| Top weekly tier | $19.99 | $29.99 |
| Monthly VIP | $39.99 | Not listed |
| Annual VIP | $199.99 | Not listed |
| Coin packs | $4.99–$29.99 | $9.99 one-time item |
| 12 months on the cheapest plan | $199.99 (annual) | $311.48 (52 × $5.99) |
| 12 months on $19.99 weekly | $1,039.48 | $1,039.48 |
When does ReelShort's annual plan beat NetShort's $5.99 week?
ReelShort's $199.99 annual plan becomes cheaper than NetShort's $5.99 weekly tier after 34 weeks of continuous watching. 33 weeks at $5.99 cost $197.67, and 34 weeks cost $203.66. If you only binge for a few weeks a year, NetShort's cheap tier wins. If you watch every week, ReelShort's annual plan wins, as long as the $5.99 tier is not an introductory price that later rises.
How do coins compare?
Neither app publishes an official coins-per-episode rate. NetShort users report 50–100 coins per episode and 100 coins per rewarded ad, which suggests roughly one ad per episode on the free route. These figures are unverified. ReelShort sells coin packs from $4.99 to $29.99, but Apple's list does not show the coin amount in each pack. For heavy viewers, a VIP plan is usually better value than repeatedly buying small coin packs.
Can you watch either app for free?
Yes, partly: both apps give free first episodes and let you earn coins through rewarded ads and tasks. NetShort's website advertises "No Ads", yet app reports describe optional ad unlocks, so expect ads on the free route. Finishing a long series for free takes days of ad watching on either app. Our free short drama apps guide compares the free routes.
Which app has better shows?
ReelShort has the stronger English-language originals; NetShort has a larger, mostly dubbed catalogue. ReelShort built its brand on US-shot productions in genres such as billionaire romance, werewolf and revenge, and leads the US on engagement: 35.7 minutes a day per user in Q4 2025, more than Netflix's 24.8 (Omdia via Sensor Tower data). NetShort's catalogue leans on dubbed and translated titles, which suits its strongest markets in Japan, South Korea and Southeast Asia.
Genres on both apps
Both apps cover the same core short drama genres: billionaire and CEO romance, revenge, secret identity, mafia, werewolf and family drama. The difference is in production style rather than genre. ReelShort's originals usually feature American casts and settings. NetShort offers more titles dubbed into many languages. See our genre guides to billionaire romance and revenge dramas.
Languages and dubbing
ReelShort's iOS app is localized into 21 languages, NetShort's into 17 (TopDrama.app snapshot, 30 September 2026). Interface language is not the same as dubbing: check whether a specific title has dubbed audio or only subtitles before you unlock it. For comparison, DramaBox lists 16 interface languages.
Features: offline, iPad, TV and web
NetShort has the edge on features because it offers offline viewing, which ReelShort has not been verified to offer. Both apps run on iPhone, iPad, Android and a web player, and neither has a dedicated TV app. If you want a TV app, ReelShort's sister app FlareFlow has a Google TV version.

Are ReelShort and NetShort safe?
Both are legitimate apps from registered companies with 100M+ Google Play installs, and both are rated 12+ on the App Store. The main risk on both is billing, not malware: weekly VIP plans renew automatically, and deleting the app does not cancel them. Purchases made through a website or an ad link are billed outside Apple and Google, so they will not appear in your store subscriptions.
How to cancel either app
- iPhone: Settings → your name → Subscriptions → ReelShort or NetShort → Cancel Subscription, at least 24 hours before renewal.
- Android: Google Play → profile → Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions → the app → Cancel.
- Web purchase: cancel through the payment method used (card, PayPal) or the app's support, and keep the receipt email.

How to choose between ReelShort and NetShort
Pick by how long you will watch and what you want to watch. The decision flow below covers the most common cases.
Choose ReelShort if…
- you want US-made English originals with American casts;
- you will watch every week for 34 weeks or more, so the $199.99 annual VIP pays off;
- you value the app with the highest US engagement (35.7 min/day, Omdia).
Choose NetShort if…
- you want the better-rated app, especially on Android (4.7★ vs 3.8★);
- you binge for a week or two and want the $5.99 tier;
- you need offline viewing for travel;
- you prefer dubbed titles in many languages.
Consider DramaBox if…
DramaBox is the middle ground: tied with ReelShort as the top-grossing app, with a higher Google Play rating (4.6★) and the largest App Store rating base (864,598). It is also the only one of the three with a published profit: $10M in 2024 (MPA). See DramaBox vs ReelShort and DramaBox vs NetShort for the full comparisons.

- Comparing only the cheapest tier. NetShort's $5.99 tier may not be the price you renew at; check the renewal price.
- Deleting the app to cancel. Cancel in App Store or Google Play subscriptions instead.
- Subscribing through an ad link. Web charges do not appear in Apple or Google settings and are harder to refund.
- Ignoring store ratings. A large gap between iOS and Android ratings, like ReelShort's 4.69 vs 3.8, usually signals billing complaints.
