ReelShort review, short answer: ReelShort is a legitimate, top-tier short drama app and the best choice for polished English-language originals, but it is not free to finish a series. The US App Store lists a $19.99 weekly VIP and ReelShort publishes a $199.99 annual plan. It tied DramaBox at about US$140M in Q1 2026 revenue (Sensor Tower), yet rates only 3.8★ on Google Play, so DramaBox remains our overall #1.

Key facts:
  • Launched in August 2022 by Crazy Maple Studio / New Leaf Publishing; COL Group holds about 49% (Variety).
  • Q1 2026 in-app revenue: ~US$140M, tied #1 with DramaBox (Sensor Tower, June 2026). 2025 gross consumer spend: ~$1.2B, up 119% (Appfigures via TechCrunch).
  • Price: weekly VIP $19.99 (explicit 7-day item on the US App Store); monthly $39.99 and annual $199.99 listed on ReelShort's own site.
  • Ratings: 4.69★ from 499,744 App Store ratings, but 3.8★ from 1.89M Google Play reviews (TopDrama.app store snapshot, 26 Sep 2026).
  • Engagement: 35.7 minutes per user per day in the US, ahead of Prime Video, Netflix and Disney+ (Omdia, Q4 2025).
  • Our score: 9.6/10 — second in our ranking behind DramaBox (9.8/10).

Is ReelShort worth it in 2026?

ReelShort is worth it if you want English-language originals with Western casts and you can use the annual plan rather than paying week by week. At $199.99 a year it costs far less than 52 weekly payments of $19.99, which add up to $1,039.48 (TopDrama.app calculation).

ReelShort is less worth it for casual viewers who only want to finish one or two series, for Android users put off by its 3.8★ Google Play rating, and for anyone who wants the widest possible catalog. For that last group, DramaBox's mix of translated, local and AI-made dramas is broader.

We did not hands-on test the app. This review is built from store listings, the App Store in-app purchase list, analyst reports (Sensor Tower, Omdia, Media Partners Asia, Appfigures) and our own store snapshot of 26 September 2026. See how we rate apps for the method.

What is ReelShort and who owns it?

ReelShort is a vertical short drama app: serialized stories told in episodes of roughly one to two minutes, shot in portrait format for phones. It is published by New Leaf Publishing Inc., with Crazy Maple Studio as the studio and support brand, and COL Group — a Chinese digital publishing company listed on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange — holds about 49% according to Variety.

COL Group also backs two sister apps, FlareFlow and Sereal+. ReelShort's Terms of Service and Privacy Policy were both last updated on 20 October 2025, according to our research review.

When did ReelShort launch?

ReelShort launched in August 2022; the US App Store lists its release as 24 August 2022. That makes it the oldest of the big Western-facing short drama apps and the app widely credited with starting the US micro-drama boom. DramaBox followed in April 2023.

How big is ReelShort?

ReelShort is one of the two largest short drama apps by revenue. Sensor Tower's Q1 2025 figures put it at $130M in in-app revenue, ahead of DramaBox's $120M; in Q1 2026 both were "close to US$140M" (Sensor Tower, June 2026). Appfigures, via TechCrunch, estimates ReelShort's 2025 gross consumer spend at roughly $1.2 billion, up 119% from 2024.

Scale has not meant profit. Media Partners Asia (Sept 2025) reported ReelShort at about $400M revenue in 2024 but "loss-making due to heavy marketing costs and amortization," while DramaBox earned $323M with a $10M net profit. Secondary sources also report 70M+ monthly users and 162.9M downloads in 2025; neither figure is confirmed by a primary source.

ReelShort at a glance: how does it compare with DramaBox?

ReelShort and DramaBox share the same business model and the same $19.99 weekly benchmark, but differ on ratings, languages and age rating. The first table comes from our app data file; the second is our App Store snapshot of 26 September 2026.

Two numbers stand out. ReelShort's iOS app is localized into 21 languages against DramaBox's 16, and it carries a 12+ App Store age rating where DramaBox is 18+. On Google Play, however, ReelShort sits at 3.8★ against DramaBox's 4.6★.

How does ReelShort work?

ReelShort works like every major short drama app: you install it free, watch the opening episodes of a series, and then hit a paywall where you unlock the rest with coins, rewarded ads or a VIP subscription. Most viewers discover a series through a clip ad on TikTok, YouTube, Instagram or Facebook.

How ReelShort turns a free viewer into a paying one 1. Clip ad onTikTok / YouTube 2. Install free,iOS / Android / web 3. Free openingepisodes 4. Paywall: coins, ads or VIP 5. What are coins and rewarded ads on ReelShort?

ReelShort coins are an in-app currency sold in one-time packs and spent to unlock individual episodes; rewarded ads let you unlock content by watching an advertisement instead of paying. ReelShort does not publish an official coins-per-episode rate, and our research found no primary figure for it.

Is ReelShort free?

ReelShort is free to download and free for the opening episodes of each series, but finishing a full series normally means paying or watching many ads. The App Store and Google Play both list it as free with in-app purchases, and the store listing shows paid items from $4.99 to $29.99.

How many episodes are free varies by title. Blog guides claim 10–20 free episodes per series, but that is unverified and ReelShort publishes no official number. Treat "free" as "free to start," the same caveat that applies to DramaBox and every other app in this category — see our guide to free short drama apps.

How much does ReelShort cost?

ReelShort costs $19.99 a week for VIP in the US, which is the category benchmark. ReelShort is one of the few apps whose App Store listing labels the item as an explicit 7-day subscription, and its own website adds a monthly VIP at $39.99 and an annual VIP at $199.99.

What does ReelShort cost over a year?

A year of ReelShort weekly VIP costs $1,039.48 (52 × $19.99), versus $479.88 for twelve monthly payments of $39.99 and $199.99 for the annual plan (TopDrama.app calculation). In other words, the annual plan is about 81% cheaper than paying weekly all year.

That published annual price is one of ReelShort's genuine advantages. DramaBox publishes no official annual price for its main app; users report roughly $200–$220 a year, and the separate DramaBox Lite app lists $129.99 a year (Sensor Tower, July 2026). Our short drama app price comparison and weekly subscription trap guide cover the maths for every major app.

How many coins does a ReelShort episode cost?

ReelShort does not publish a coins-per-episode rate, and Apple's purchase list does not show how many coins each pack contains. A blog figure of 100 coins for $0.99 circulates online but is unverified. If you plan to binge, compare the cost of one VIP period with the coins you would need before buying packs.

What can you watch on ReelShort?

ReelShort's catalog is built around English-language originals with Western casts and Hollywood-style production — the "best English originals" label in our ranking. Typical genres are romance, billionaire and CEO stories, werewolf and alpha romance, revenge and secret-identity plots, the same tropes that dominate the category.

By comparison, DramaBox leans on volume: the Dianzhong corporate site says about 95% of its 2,000+ titles are translated Chinese productions, alongside US-shot originals and a growing AI-made slate. ReelShort's catalog is described in our sources as smaller but more polished. For the genre basics, read what is a short drama.

Yes — in July 2025 DramaBox's parent Dianzhong and Tinghuadao publicly accused ReelShort of 1:1 copying of several titles (reported by 10jqka, 26 July 2025). This was an accusation reported in the Chinese press; our research found no court ruling, so treat it as an unresolved dispute rather than a finding.

Which devices and languages does ReelShort support?

ReelShort runs on iPhone, iPad, Android and the web. The iOS app requires iOS 15.0 or later and is localized into 21 languages in our 26 September 2026 snapshot; ReelShort also runs a web player on its own website. That iPad and web coverage is broader than DramaBox's iPhone-only iOS listing.

Can you watch ReelShort offline or on a TV?

Our sources show no verified offline download or dedicated TV app for ReelShort. If offline viewing matters, ShortMax and NetShort advertise it; for a TV app, ReelShort's sister app FlareFlow has a Google TV version. DramaBox also has no verified offline mode or TV app.

What do users think of ReelShort?

ReelShort users rate it very differently by platform: 4.69★ from 499,744 App Store ratings but only 3.8★ from 1.89M Google Play reviews in our 26 September 2026 snapshot. An earlier research snapshot showed ReelShort at 4.3★ on Google Play, so its Android rating has fallen noticeably.

ReelShort's Google Play rating trails DramaBox by 0.8 stars. Source: TopDrama.app store snapshot (US App Store and Google Play), 26 Sep 2026.

How engaged are ReelShort viewers?

ReelShort has the highest engagement figure recorded in the category: 35.7 minutes per user per day in the US in Q4 2025, ahead of Prime Video (26.9), Netflix (24.8) and Disney+ (23.0), according to Omdia using Sensor Tower data. Its US mobile reach is still small, though — about 1.1M monthly users against Netflix's roughly 12M on the same measure.

A YouGov Appetite Score cited in our research also puts ReelShort ahead of DramaBox (55.44 vs 31.95); we could not check the underlying methodology, so treat it as a reported figure.

What do people complain about on ReelShort?

ReelShort complaints follow the category pattern: weekly auto-renewal, the cost of finishing a series and ads. We did not run a 100-review tally for ReelShort, but across the apps we did tally, being charged after cancelling was the top complaint everywhere, followed by per-episode price and ads. ReelShort's 3.8★ Google Play score suggests Android users feel these issues more sharply.

Is ReelShort safe and legit?

ReelShort is a legitimate app from an identifiable publisher, with more than 100M Google Play installs, nearly half a million App Store ratings and part-ownership by a stock-exchange-listed company. It is not a scam; the real risk is billing, because the VIP is an auto-renewing weekly subscription.

Download only the official app from the App Store or Google Play and read the billing period on the checkout sheet. ReelShort's 12+ App Store rating is gentler than DramaBox's 18+, but the romance and revenge tropes can still be intense, so parents should preview titles.

ReelShort pros and cons

  • Polished English-language originals with Western casts

  • Only 3.8★ on Google Play, well below DramaBox's 4.6★

Who should use ReelShort, and who shouldn't?

Who is ReelShort best for?

ReelShort suits viewers who want English originals that look like network TV squeezed into one-minute episodes, heavy bingers who will commit to the $199.99 annual plan, iPad owners, and households that prefer a 12+ age rating. If you already know you like the ReelShort style from its ads, it is a safe place to spend.

Who should skip ReelShort?

ReelShort is a poor fit for budget viewers who would end up paying $19.99 a week, Android users who weigh store ratings heavily, and viewers who want huge variety, translated Asian dramas or AI-made experiments. Those viewers are better served by DramaBox or by cheaper weekly tiers at NetShort ($5.99) or GoodShort ($5.99).

ReelShort vs DramaBox: which is better?

DramaBox is the better all-round short drama app, and ReelShort is the better specialist for English originals. We rank DramaBox #1 (9.8/10) and ReelShort #2 (9.6/10) because DramaBox matches ReelShort on quarterly revenue while being profitable, better rated on Google Play and broader in content. The full head-to-head is in DramaBox vs ReelShort.

Where does ReelShort beat DramaBox?

ReelShort wins on five points: polished English originals, a published $199.99 annual price, higher US engagement (35.7 min/day), more iOS languages (21 vs 16) and a family-friendlier 12+ App Store rating versus DramaBox's 18+. It also had far higher 2025 gross consumer spend (~$1.2B vs $276M, Appfigures), although that figure is measured differently from Sensor Tower's quarterly tie.

Where does DramaBox beat ReelShort?

DramaBox wins on the numbers that predict a good long-term experience: a 4.6★ Google Play rating from 5.46M reviews against ReelShort's 3.8★, a slightly higher App Store score from 861K ratings, a $10M net profit in 2024 where ReelShort lost money (MPA), and three content types — translated, local originals and AI dramas. DramaBox also offers a cheaper Lite app with published plans. That is why DramaBox, the top drama app by revenue in Q1 2026, stays our first pick; our DramaBox review lists its drawbacks too, including weekly billing and ads.

How do you cancel a ReelShort subscription?

Cancel ReelShort where you bought it, at least 24 hours before the next renewal. On iPhone go to Settings → your name → Subscriptions → ReelShort → Cancel Subscription; on Android open Google Play → profile → Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions → ReelShort → Cancel.

Deleting the app does not cancel the subscription. If the charge does not appear in Apple or Google settings, you probably paid on ReelShort's website, so cancel through that account or the payment method you used. Refunds for store purchases are handled by Apple or Google under their own policies.

  • Who it doesn't suit: casual or budget viewers who would pay $19.99 a week, and Android users who weigh the 3.8★ Google Play rating.
