Who owns DramaBox?
DramaBox is ultimately owned by Beijing Dianzhong Technology Co., a privately held Beijing company that began in online reading and moved into short dramas in 2022. The app is operated and published by STORYMATRIX PTE. LTD., the Singapore company named as developer on both the Apple App Store and Google Play listings (our store snapshot, 26 Sep 2026).
No public document names outside shareholders of STORYMATRIX, and Dianzhong has not filed a prospectus that would disclose its cap table. What is on record is the operating chain: Dianzhong's founder Chen Ruiqing is described by The Ankler (2025) as "DramaBox CEO Ruiqing Chen", and Tracxn (31 Aug 2026) lists him as the founder of the Singapore entity.

What is Beijing Dianzhong Technology?
Beijing Dianzhong Technology is the Chinese parent of DramaBox, founded on 15 September 2011 with Chen Ruiqing as legal representative (Baidu Baike). It built its business on paid online reading before moving into video. In 2019 it launched Webfic, an overseas reading app, which gave it an international user base and a library of story IP before DramaBox existed (Dianzhong corporate site).
Dianzhong entered micro-drama production in China in September 2022 (21jingji, 20 Aug 2024) and started its overseas micro-drama business in April 2023, the month DramaBox launched. By May 2025 DramaBox and four other Dianzhong micro-drama apps had passed 150 million total users (Wikipedia, secondary).
How big is Dianzhong?
Dianzhong reported roughly RMB 14.5 billion in 2025 revenue, according to chairman Chen Ruiqing: RMB 10.9 billion domestic plus US$530 million overseas (Baijing / 短剧自习室, 11 Jun 2026). These are executive statements, not audited accounts. By subtraction, the overseas business, which includes DramaBox, was worth about RMB 3.6 billion, roughly a quarter of the group (TopDrama.app calculation).
Is Dianzhong profitable?
Dianzhong describes its margins as thin. In a 2024 statement reported by Baijing, the company put its overall gross margin at "10% 左右" (about 10%) and its China short-drama net margin at "不到 1%" (under 1%), pushing back on "RMB 400M a month" headlines. DramaBox itself was profitable in 2024: Media Partners Asia (MPA, Sept 2025) reported $323 million revenue and $10 million net profit, a net margin of about 3.1% (TopDrama.app calculation).
What is STORYMATRIX PTE. LTD.?
STORYMATRIX PTE. LTD. is the Singapore company that publishes DramaBox and DramaBox Lite (package com.storymatrix.lite). It appears as the developer on the iOS listing (id6445905219) and on Google Play, and its Raffles City Tower address is the developer contact shown by Google Play (checked 26 Sep 2026).
When was StoryMatrix incorporated?
StoryMatrix was incorporated in Singapore in 2022, but sources disagree on the month. The company's own about page says 2022; Wikipedia (cited in two research reports) says January 2022; Tracxn (31 Aug 2026) says June 2022 and names Chen Ruiqing as founder. We have not seen the ACRA registry record, so we state only the year as confirmed.
Where is DramaBox headquartered?
DramaBox's legal headquarters is in Singapore, at 250 North Bridge Road #29-03, Raffles City Tower, Singapore 179101. Operational control and much of the content pipeline sit with Dianzhong in Beijing, while live-action originals are produced by a Los Angeles studio. The privacy policy (updated 18 Jul 2026) says user data is stored on a server in Singapore, and Singapore's PDPA 2012 applies to the publisher.
Is DramaBox a Chinese app?
DramaBox is a Chinese-owned app published through a Singapore company. Its parent, Beijing Dianzhong Technology, is based in China, and the Dianzhong corporate site says about 95% of DramaBox's 2,000+ titles were "国产译制剧", translated Chinese productions (a company claim). The publisher of record, however, is STORYMATRIX PTE. LTD. in Singapore, and a growing share of content is shot in the US and Latin America.
This structure is common in the category. CNSA figures reported by Yicai (8 Dec 2025) say 90% of the top-20 overseas short-drama apps by revenue were Chinese-backed. For a user-safety view of what this means for data and billing, see is DramaBox safe; for spotting clones, see how to find the official DramaBox app.
What does Chinese ownership mean for users?
For DramaBox users, ownership mainly affects content mix and data governance. The privacy label on Apple declares "Data Used to Track You" (identifiers, usage data), and the privacy policy names SDKs such as Firebase, Facebook SDK, AppsFlyer, AppLovin MAX and Alibaba ApsaraVideo. Billing runs through Apple, Google or web payments, so refunds follow the store's rules, not Beijing's. Since 1 Sep 2026, China's NRTA Order No. 16 Art. 52 also covers dramas shot in China for overseas broadcast.
Who runs DramaBox? Key people
DramaBox's public leadership is led by founder Chen Ruiqing, with a small group of executives who speak to the press on studio work, development, communications and advertising. The table lists only people named in dated sources.
| Person | Role | On record | Source, date |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chen Ruiqing | Founder and chairman, Dianzhong; described as DramaBox CEO | 2025 revenue figures; 2026 forecast of >$1B for DramaBox | Baijing, 11 Jun 2026; The Ankler, 2025 |

Who is Chen Ruiqing?
Chen Ruiqing is the founder of Dianzhong and the executive behind DramaBox. He is the legal representative of the Beijing company (Baidu Baike) and the source of most of its financial disclosures. His advice to newcomers, reported by Baijing in 2026, was blunt: "都是血汗钱,亏是真亏,赚不一定能赚" ("the losses are real, the profits aren't guaranteed"). He also forecast DramaBox revenue above $1 billion in 2026, which is a projection, not a result.
What does the Los Angeles studio do?
DramaBox's Los Angeles studio produces English-language live-action originals under head of studio Shicong Zhu. The Ankler reported 60+ titles in 2025. These sit alongside translated Chinese dramas and, since 2026, AI-generated titles; see DramaBox genres and shows for how the three content types differ.
What have DramaBox executives said?
DramaBox executives frame the company around growth and speed. Wang Hefei (26 Apr 2026): "Short drama has become a powerful new growth engine for the global open internet digital content market." Christianne Cruz: "We're looking for writers who can move fast, be bold, and understand what hooks an audience within seconds." Marcela Kartaszewicz told Produ the Latin American challenge is "cultural precision" rather than production speed.

How much revenue does the DramaBox company make?
DramaBox made $323 million in revenue in 2024 with a $10 million net profit, according to MPA (Sept 2025). Estimates for 2025 range from $276 million (Appfigures gross consumer spend, via TechCrunch) to more than $470 million (net pay revenue, 短剧自习室 via Baijing), because each source measures something different. The full breakdown is on our DramaBox statistics page.
How does DramaBox's profit compare with ReelShort?
DramaBox was profitable in 2024 while ReelShort was not, per MPA: ReelShort reached about $400 million in 2024 but "remains loss-making due to heavy marketing costs and amortization" (Variety, citing MPA). In Q1 2026 the two were tied at close to US$140 million each in in-app revenue (Sensor Tower, June 2026), which makes DramaBox the top drama app by revenue alongside ReelShort. See DramaBox vs ReelShort.
Is DramaBox or Dianzhong publicly listed?
No. Neither DramaBox nor Dianzhong is listed on a stock exchange as of 26 Sep 2026. Dianzhong withdrew its application for Shenzhen's ChiNext board on 27 December 2021, and in 2024 it said it had "暂无上市计划" (no listing plans for now). We found no Hong Kong IPO prospectus.
Because there is no listing, there are no audited public accounts. Every DramaBox revenue figure comes from analysts (MPA, Sensor Tower, Appfigures) or executive remarks. Business Insider reported in January 2026 that DramaBox "seeks new funding", but the article title gives no amount, investor or valuation, and no deal has been confirmed in our sources.
DramaBox partnerships and deals
DramaBox's partnerships connect a Chinese-owned app to Hollywood, ad-tech and writers' communities. The most cited are the 2025 Disney Accelerator and the 2026 deal with The Trade Desk.

DramaBox was one of four companies chosen for the 2025 Disney Accelerator, announced 28 Jul 2025. Disney described it as "a leading vertical microdrama platform and production company". Bonnie Rosen, GM of the Accelerator, said the four were picked "from thousands vetted". The Accelerator is a mentorship programme; it does not make DramaBox part of Disney.
What happened at Disney Demo Day?
At the Disney Accelerator Demo Day, DramaBox and Disney Publishing were reported to be exploring adaptations of existing IP into microdramas, including YA fantasy novels and music albums. Sources differ on the date (5 Nov 2025 in one report; December 2025 in Disney's own recap alongside Animaj, Haddy and LIMINAL Space). No released Disney-DramaBox title is on record.
What is the Trade Desk deal?
On 26 Apr 2026 The Trade Desk became DramaBox's first DSP partner, letting advertisers buy DramaBox ad inventory programmatically (PR Newswire). It adds an advertising revenue line to coins and memberships. MPA forecasts ads reaching 25% of ex-China microdrama revenue by 2030.
What is the Stage 32 incubator?
Stage 32 and DramaBox launched a vertical drama incubator on 5 Dec 2025. Its screenwriting competition was won by Erin Dugard with Undercover Vows; the prize included a $5,000 writing contract. We found no confirmation the script has been filmed. Stage 32 CEO RB Botto: "Vertical series aren't just a trend. They're a legitimate career pathway."
What is DramaBox doing in Latin America?
DramaBox plans 20+ locally adapted verticals for Latin America in 2026 (Produ, 26 Jun 2026), with a slate of 5 Brazil, 3 Colombia and 3 Mexico projects of typically 70–80 episodes each. Its first Colombian original, Su Amor Fue una Mentira, was produced with Albereda Films (Produ, 25 Sep 2026). The method, called "reskinning", adapts proven scripts to local markets.
What was the DramaBox vs ReelShort copyright dispute?
In July 2025 Dianzhong and Tinghuadao publicly accused ReelShort of 1:1 copying several of their titles (10jqka, 26 Jul 2025). Our sources do not report a court ruling, settlement or ReelShort response, so the dispute should be treated as an allegation. It shows how valuable proven scripts have become in a business built on reusing formats.

Does the ownership make DramaBox trustworthy?
DramaBox's corporate backing is a strength on scale and a caveat on transparency. It has operated since 2023, reported a profit, and passed vetting by Disney and The Trade Desk. It also has no audited public accounts, conflicting self-reported user figures, and a privacy label that discloses cross-app tracking.
