A short drama (also called a micro-drama, vertical drama or duanju) is a serialized story filmed in portrait 9:16 format for phones, told in episodes of about 1–2 minutes that each end on a cliffhanger. Most are watched in dedicated apps such as DramaBox, where the first episodes are free and later ones are unlocked with coins, ads or a membership.

Key facts:
  • China's regulator defines a micro-drama as a series whose single episodes run under 20 minutes (NRTA Order No. 16, Art. 2, effective 1 Sep 2026).
  • Typical format: 1–2 minute episodes (Omdia), vertical 9:16 video, and series of roughly 40–100 episodes.
  • Short drama apps earned $2.98B in in-app purchases in 2025, up 115% (Sensor Tower via Marketing Dive).
  • The core US audience is "affluent, urban women aged 30 to 60" (Media Partners Asia, Sept 2025).
  • DramaBox and ReelShort were tied as the top-grossing short drama apps in Q1 2026 at about $140M each (Sensor Tower, June 2026).

What is a short drama?

A short drama is a scripted series designed for a phone screen: vertical video, episodes of one to two minutes, a fast plot and a cliffhanger at the end of almost every episode. DramaBox, ReelShort and similar apps publish thousands of these series, usually in romance, revenge and billionaire genres.

The format sits between a TV soap opera and a social-media clip. It has the continuing characters and plot of a soap, but the running time and vertical framing of a TikTok video. A complete series can often be watched in the time of one feature film.

What is the official definition of a micro-drama?

The only legal definition comes from China's National Radio and Television Administration. NRTA Order No. 16, Art. 2 (published 31 Jul 2026, effective 1 Sep 2026) defines a micro-drama as a series with single episodes under 20 minutes, a clear theme and main storyline, a continuous and complete plot, and prominent characters. That ceiling is generous: most commercial short dramas run far below it.

How does the industry define short drama apps?

Sensor Tower's June 2026 report describes short drama apps as platforms that "deliver serialized, mobile-first video stories built for quick consumption and repeat engagement… using short episodes and cliffhanger-led storytelling." In practice, the industry uses the term for apps such as DramaBox, ReelShort, ShortMax, NetShort, GoodShort and FreeReels.

What does "micro drama" mean in plain English?

"Micro drama" simply means a very short drama episode, usually one minute or so, released as part of a long series. The word "micro" refers to episode length, not to the story: one series can run to 50–100 episodes and a full romance or revenge arc.

What other names are used for short dramas?

Short dramas go by many names because the format grew in China first and then spread to English-speaking, Latin American and Southeast Asian markets. DramaBox calls its content "drama shorts," while journalists tend to write "micro-drama" or "vertical drama." All of these terms describe the same product.

Because "Playlet" is also the name of an app, searches for that word mix the genre with the brand. The same happens with "reels": ReelShort and FreeReels borrowed the word from social video.

How does a short drama app work?

A short drama app such as DramaBox works like a free-to-play mobile game: the app and the first episodes are free, and later episodes are locked behind coins, rewarded ads or a recurring membership. The model is built to convert a viewer who is hooked by the story into a payer at the moment the story is most tense.

Step 1: How do viewers find short dramas?

Most viewers find a short drama through a clip ad on social media. Omdia notes that "discovery is driven through platforms such as YouTube, Instagram and TikTok." Sensor Tower data for 2024 shows that paid installs made up more than 60% of DramaBox and ShortMax downloads and about 70% of ReelShort's.

Step 2: Are the first episodes free?

Yes. On DramaBox and its main rivals the app is free to install and the opening episodes of each series are free. DramaBox publishes no official number; guides often cite 5–10 free episodes. SagaBox, a browser platform, states that the first 5 episodes of every title are free.

Step 3: What happens at the paywall?

At the paywall the viewer chooses between three ways to continue. DramaBox's developer explained it in an App Store reply (26 Jun 2024): "You can unlock dramas for free by collecting free coins through completing tasks or simply by watching ads. For the paying, we recommend the subscription rather than coins." Our DramaBox coins guide and DramaBox price guide explain each option.

What does a short drama look like? Format and length

A short drama is filmed in portrait orientation (9:16) so it fills a phone screen, and each episode usually lasts 1–2 minutes. DramaBox App Store reviewers describe some episodes as "not even 1 min long." Series are long: most run to dozens of episodes, and some pass 100.

How long is a short drama episode?

A short drama episode is typically 1–2 minutes long, according to Omdia and LAist reporting. Western originals often land at about 75–85 seconds, per one industry blog (unverified). The NRTA's legal upper limit of 20 minutes is far above what apps like DramaBox actually publish.

How many episodes does a short drama have?

Most short dramas have between roughly 40 and 100 episodes. Two DramaBox titles listed on its web player show the range: Deny Me, Dragon King has 50 episodes and Tempest: The Last Mecha has 58. DramaBox told Produ (June 2026) that a typical Latin American project runs 70–80 episodes.

How long does it take to watch a whole short drama?

TopDrama.app calculation: a 60-episode series at an average of 1.5 minutes per episode takes about 90 minutes, roughly the length of a feature film. An 80-episode series at the same pace takes about two hours. This is why many viewers finish a series in one or two sittings, and why weekly memberships suit binge viewers.

Where did short dramas come from? A short history

Short dramas started as a Chinese online format, were formally recognized by China's regulator in 2020, and went global in 2022–2023 when ReelShort and then DramaBox launched English-language apps. By 2026 the category had become a multi-billion-dollar business with its own regulation.

How did short dramas start in China?

In China, short dramas (duanju) grew on online video platforms before the NRTA formally recognized online micro-dramas in August 2020. The China Netcasting Services Association (CNSA) counted 576 million micro-drama viewers in June 2024, 52.4% of Chinese internet users, and valued the domestic market at RMB 50.44B for 2024.

When did short dramas go global?

The overseas boom began with ReelShort in August 2022, followed by DramaBox in April 2023 and ShortMax in September 2023. Appfigures data reported by TechCrunch shows consumer spending on these apps rising from $1.8M in Q1 2023 to $146M in Q1 2024.

What changed in 2025–2026?

Three things changed: artificial intelligence, advertising and Hollywood. CNSA estimates cited by CNBC (26 Aug 2026) say about 128,000 short dramas were released in China in Q1 2026, "over 95% of which were AI." DramaBox added programmatic ads through The Trade Desk in April 2026, and Disney, NBCUniversal and Fox all moved into the format.

What genres do short dramas cover?

Short dramas focus on high-emotion genres that hook viewers within seconds: romance, revenge, CEO/billionaire, mafia, werewolf/alpha, secret baby, family and fantasy. DramaBox markets its catalogue as running from "heart-fluttering romance to gut-wrenching drama." Research files also list hidden identity, status reversal, historical, thriller and reincarnation tropes.

DramaBox's Head of Development, Christianne Cruz, described the craft as finding writers "who can move fast, be bold, and understand what hooks an audience within seconds." Our DramaBox genres and shows guide covers the catalogue in detail.

Where do short dramas come from: translated, local or AI?

Short dramas on international apps come from three sources: translated or dubbed Chinese productions, local originals shot in the US and other markets, and AI-generated series. Dianzhong's corporate site says 95% of DramaBox's 2,000+ titles were translated Chinese productions (a company claim), while its Los Angeles studio made 60+ titles in 2025 (The Ankler). See DramaBox AI dramas.

How do short dramas make money?

Short dramas make money mainly from viewers paying to unlock episodes (coins) or subscribing (memberships), with advertising as a growing second stream. For DramaBox, the developer recommends "the subscription rather than coins." Outside China, Media Partners Asia expects the 2030 revenue mix to be 74% subscription/IAP, 25% ads and 1% commerce.

Why is production cheap but distribution expensive?

Vivek Couto of Media Partners Asia summed up the economics in September 2025: "Production is cheap, but distribution is costly, and success depends on speed, scale and repeatable IP." Ashley Dudarenok told CNBC (Aug 2026) that Chinese ad costs (CPM) rose from RMB 50–80 in 2023 to RMB 150–200 in 2025, because making the right audience see a drama "can cost far more" than making it.

Are short drama companies profitable?

Some are, but margins are thin. MPA reported that DramaBox made $10M net profit on $323M revenue in 2024, a margin of about 3% (TopDrama.app calculation), while ReelShort, at about $400M revenue, "remains loss-making." Dianzhong said in 2024 that its short-drama net margin in China was under 1%.

How big is the short drama industry?

Short drama apps earned $2.98B in App Store and Google Play purchases in 2025, up 115% year on year (Sensor Tower via Marketing Dive). Omdia, which counts all revenue types including China, puts global microdrama revenue at $11B in 2025, rising to $14B in 2026. DramaBox alone took about 19% of Q1 2026 category IAP.

Growth in spending is slowing even as downloads surge: Q1 2026 IAP rose 20% while downloads passed 850 million, up 140%. Our short drama market 2026 guide explains why forecasts from Omdia, MPA and Deloitte differ.

Who watches short dramas?

The typical short drama viewer is a woman aged roughly 25 to 60 who watches on a phone in short breaks. Media Partners Asia describes DramaBox's core US audience as "affluent, urban women aged 30 to 60," and Omdia puts the global target at women aged 25–45. Reuters reported about 66 million US monthly users in August 2026.

How many Americans watch micro-dramas?

Reuters (Aug 2026) put the US microdrama audience at about 66 million monthly active users, more than double a year earlier. Deloitte's March 2025 survey found that about 30% of US Gen Z and millennials were familiar with micro-series, a figure now more than a year old.

Do people watch short dramas on YouTube?

Yes, and in large numbers. Tubefilter reported 6.5 billion microdrama views on YouTube in H1 2026. Digital i data (World Screen, 26 Mar 2026) shows women aged 35–44 make up 11.5% of all YouTube streams but 20.8% of streams to top micro-drama channels, and women 45–54 account for 15.7%.

How much time do viewers spend on short drama apps?

Sensor Tower measured an average of 25 minutes a day in short drama apps in April 2026, up 85% from January 2025, against about 35 minutes for traditional streaming apps. In Mexico, Omdia found DramaBox users spent 27.9 minutes a day, more than Prime Video's 23.8 minutes (Q4 2025).

Why are short dramas so addictive?

Short dramas are built to be hard to stop: every 1–2 minute episode ends on a cliffhanger, the next episode starts automatically, and the paywall appears at a peak of tension. The emotional payoff is fast and the next reward is always seconds away. DramaBox's 2024 user cohort kept 17% of users at month 6 and 15% at month 12 (Sensor Tower), which Sensor Tower called unusually strong.

How do cliffhangers keep viewers hooked?

A cliffhanger at the end of each short episode creates an open question the viewer wants answered immediately. Because the next answer is only a minute away, viewers keep tapping. Some App Store reviewers complain about the opposite problem: series that end on "cliff hangers type ending" without resolution.

Is there regulation against addictive design?

Yes, in China. NRTA Order No. 16, Art. 37 says platforms may not use algorithms that induce addiction or excessive spending, and Art. 40 requires clear disclosure of charges. Fines reach up to RMB 100,000 (Art. 46). No equivalent short-drama-specific rule exists in the US or EU; see our weekly subscription guide.

Pros and cons of short dramas as a format

Short dramas suit people who want quick emotional payoff in small gaps of time, and suit them less if they want prestige production or low cost. Apps like DramaBox make the format easy to sample for free, but finishing a series usually costs money or a lot of ad-watching.

  • Fits commutes and breaks: 1–2 minute episodes.
  • A full story in about 90 minutes to 2 hours.
  • Free first episodes on every major app.
  • Huge catalogues in many languages (DramaBox: 16 app languages).

Cons

  • Finishing a series usually needs coins, ads or a membership.
  • Weekly auto-renewing plans can add up fast.
  • Formulaic plots and cliffhanger endings.
  • Mature themes: DramaBox is rated 18+ on the App Store.

Short drama FAQ

What is a short drama?

A short drama is a serialized story filmed vertically for phones, with episodes of about 1–2 minutes that end on cliffhangers. Series usually run 40–100 episodes. Apps like DramaBox and ReelShort specialize in them.

What is the difference between a short drama and a micro-drama?

There is no real difference: both terms describe the same format. "Micro-drama" is more common in analyst reports and the press, while "short drama" is used by apps such as DramaBox and by Sensor Tower.

What does duanju mean?

Duanju (短剧) is Chinese for "short drama." Weiduanju (微短剧) means "micro short drama" and is the term used in NRTA regulations, which define it as a series with episodes under 20 minutes.

What is a vertical drama?

A vertical drama is a short drama filmed in 9:16 portrait orientation so it fills a phone screen without rotating it. US trade press and the SAG-AFTRA Verticals Agreement (Oct 2025) use the term "verticals."

How long is a short drama episode?

Most short drama episodes run 1–2 minutes (Omdia). Chinese law caps micro-drama episodes at under 20 minutes, but commercial apps publish far shorter episodes.

How many episodes does a short drama have?

Usually 40 to 100. DramaBox examples include 50 episodes for Deny Me, Dragon King and 58 for Tempest: The Last Mecha; its Latin American projects run 70–80 episodes (Produ, June 2026).

Are short dramas free to watch?

Partly. The first episodes are free on every major app, and rewarded ads can unlock more, but finishing a series usually requires coins or a membership. See our free short drama apps guide.

Who watches short dramas?

Mostly women. MPA describes the core US audience as affluent, urban women aged 30–60, and Omdia targets women aged 25–45. Reuters counted about 66 million US monthly users in August 2026.

Why are short dramas so addictive?

Every episode ends on a cliffhanger, the next one plays within seconds, and the paywall appears at a moment of peak tension. China's NRTA now bans algorithms that induce addiction or over-spending (Order No. 16, Art. 37).

Are short dramas made with AI?

Increasingly, yes. CNSA estimates cited by CNBC say over 95% of the roughly 128,000 short dramas released in China in Q1 2026 were AI-made. Since 1 Sep 2026, Chinese rules require a visible AI label in every episode.

What is the best app for short dramas?

DramaBox is our top pick in 2026: tied #1 by in-app revenue in Q1 2026, rated 4.8 on the App Store and 4.6 on Google Play, and available in 16 languages. ReelShort is the main alternative for English-language originals.

How big is the short drama market?

Short drama apps earned $2.98B in in-app purchases in 2025 (Sensor Tower). Omdia estimates total global microdrama revenue, including China and ads, at $11B in 2025 and $14B in 2026.

Bottom line

  • A short drama is a vertical, 1–2 minute-per-episode series of about 40–100 episodes, legally defined in China as episodes under 20 minutes.
  • It suits viewers who want fast, emotional stories in short breaks; it suits less those who dislike cliffhangers, mature themes or recurring payments.
  • The format is a $2.98B app category (2025 IAP) watched by tens of millions, mostly women aged 25–60.
  • To try it, start with the free episodes on DramaBox, the top drama app by Q1 2026 revenue, and check the billing period before paying.
